A carpool consists of two or more people sharing a ride together in a common vehicle. Rather then commuting in their individual cars, students from the same community drive in together.
Goal: Reduce the carbon footprint of the campus student commuting population
In the Fall 2008, 18,079 students were registered to attend UCR. Out of that population, 15,708 were undergraduate students and a large majority of those students commute to campus thus contributing to the generation of a significant number of carbon emissions.
Program Details: Student carpool permits will be issued on a quarterly basis for Lot 30 and be available after the second week of each term.
Only one student carpool permit will be issued per carpool.
To ensure students have complementary schedules that enable them to carpool, students will not be able to apply for a carpool permit until after the second week of the quarter.
It will be the responsibility of the student carpoolers to provide the necessary document to verify the carpool. All of the students within the carpool will need to be present at the time the documents are submitted. Those documents include:
Proof of residence
Examples:
Utility bill (i.e. gas. Water, electric, phone, cable, etc)
DMV paperwork
Bank statement
Rental agreement
Copy of current class schedule
The students must live outside the service area of the Crest Cruiser as defined by the following streets:
Spruce Street
Watkins Avenue
Central Avenue
Chicago Avenue
The carpool spaces pilot would initially be a small number of spaces adjacent to the steps lot 30. The spaces would be available for carpool permit holders until 11:00 am. After 11:00 am, the spaces would be open to regular commuter permit holders.
Cost:
The cost of a quarterly student carpool permit is the same as a regular Gold parking permit, $84 per quarter. The incentive to participate in the program is to be able to park in the Carpool spaces in Lot 30.
For students that have already purchased Gold permits, one of the permits can be exchanged for a Student Carpool permit and the other permit will be eligible for a refund. The 2009 - 2010 refund schedule can be found here.
Application Process:
Students wishing to apply for a carpool permit need to come together to TAPS with their proof of residence and copy of current class schedule.
